Former NFL linebacker Darron Lee has been formally indicted on a first-degree murder charge in the death of his partner, Gabriella Perpetuo, a 29-year-old woman found dead at a home in Hamilton County, Tennessee, in February.

A Hamilton County grand jury returned the indictment on June 10, with prosecutors announcing that they dropped a separate tampering-with-evidence charge to focus exclusively on pursuing a murder conviction. According to District Attorney Coty Wamp, the case is eligible for capital punishment, though a final decision on whether to seek the death penalty will be made in the coming weeks.

What We Know About the Victim:  Authorities identified the victim as Gabriella (Gabriela Carvalho) Perpetuo, 29, who was found unresponsive inside her Hamilton County residence near Ooltewah Elementary School. Lee called 911 and reportedly told dispatchers that he believed she may have fallen in the shower.

However, investigators say the evidence painted a far different picture. According to court testimony and the medical examiner’s findings, Perpetuo died from multiple blunt force injuries. Her autopsy documented 12 separate injuries, including severe brain trauma, bone fractures, stab wounds, multiple hematomas, a broken neck, and extensive bruising. Investigators also reported finding bite marks that were collected for DNA analysis.

Detectives described a violent crime scene, saying blood was found on staircases, walls, floors, handrails, and in multiple rooms of the home.

Allegations and Lee’s Criminal History:  Prosecutors allege Lee attempted to disguise the circumstances surrounding Perpetuo’s death. During earlier court proceedings, investigators testified that Lee allegedly used ChatGPT to ask questions about obtaining medical assistance without contacting police and whether a shower fall could explain injuries such as bruising around both eyes and what he described as “two stabby looking wounds.”

Authorities also testified that cleaning supplies, including bleach wipes and a spray bottle, were discovered inside the home.

At the time of his arrest, Lee was already on probation in both Franklin County, Ohio, and Alachua County, Florida. Court records show he had been charged in three separate alleged assault cases involving another man, his mother, and the mother of his child. Tennessee officials also said he was on probation for a Florida aggravated assault conviction and had allegedly moved to Tennessee without approval, violating the terms of his supervision.

Darron Lee’s NFL Career:  Lee, 31, was a standout linebacker at Ohio State University before being selected by the New York Jets with the 20th overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft.

He spent three seasons with the Jets before later playing for the Kansas City Chiefs and Buffalo Bills. Between 2016 and 2020, Lee appeared in 58 NFL games, recording 273 tackles, four sacks, and two forced fumbles before his professional football career came to an end after the 2020 season.

What’s Next?  Lee remains held in the Hamilton County Jail without bond. Prosecutors are seeking a first-degree murder conviction, which carries a potential sentence of life imprisonment, while officials continue to weigh whether to pursue the death penalty.

An arraignment date in Hamilton County Criminal Court had not been publicly announced as of June 11, 2026. Like all criminal defendants, Lee is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
