LONDON, England — Former British glam rock star Gary Glitter, whose real name is Paul Francis Gadd, has been charged with four new historic sexual offenses involving an alleged child victim, British authorities announced on July 2.

The 82-year-old entertainer is accused of one count of unlawful sexual intercourse with a girl under the age of 13 and three counts of indecent assault on a girl under 14. According to the Metropolitan Police and Crown Prosecution Service, the alleged offenses involve one complainant and are said to have occurred between 1978 and 1981 at a residence in Kensington, London.

Prosecutors said the allegations were first reported to police in January 2025, and Gadd was interviewed in connection with the investigation later that year. Specialist officers are continuing to support the alleged victim.

Deputy Chief Crown Prosecutor Bethan David said prosecutors determined there was sufficient evidence to bring the case forward and that doing so was in the public interest.

From Glam Rock Icon to Convicted Sex Offender:  During the 1970s, Gary Glitter became one of Britain’s most recognizable glam rock performers. Performing under his stage name after previously recording as Paul Raven, he built a string of chart hits including “Rock and Roll (Part 2),” “Do You Wanna Touch Me,” and “I Love You Love Me Love.” He sold more than 20 million records worldwide, earned multiple U.K. chart successes, and became known by nicknames such as “The Leader of the Gang” and “The Godfather of Glam.”

Despite his commercial success, his career later became overshadowed by decades of criminal investigations and convictions involving child sexual abuse.

Long Criminal History:  Gadd’s criminal record dates back nearly three decades. In 1999, he was convicted in the United Kingdom for possessing child sexual abuse material. After serving that sentence, he left Britain and was later deported from Cambodia amid child sex abuse allegations.

In 2006, a Vietnamese court convicted him of committing obscene acts involving two girls, ages 10 and 11, sentencing him to prison before he was eventually deported back to the United Kingdom.

His most serious convictions came in 2015, when he was found guilty of attempted rape, unlawful sexual intercourse with a girl under 13, and multiple counts of indecent assault involving three schoolgirls abused between 1975 and 1980. He received a 16-year prison sentence.

Although released on license in February 2023, he was returned to prison just weeks later after violating the conditions of his release. A subsequent parole application was denied, and he remains incarcerated.

Brief Biography:  Born May 8, 1944, in Banbury, Oxfordshire, England, Paul Francis Gadd rose from modest beginnings to become one of Britain’s biggest glam rock stars during the 1970s. Beyond his music career, he also received film soundtrack credits, with his recordings appearing in numerous movies and sporting events over the years. However, his legacy has become overwhelmingly defined by repeated criminal convictions and allegations involving the sexual abuse of children.

What’s Next?  Gary Glitter is scheduled to appear before Westminster Magistrates’ Court on August 5, 2026, to face the newly filed charges. As with all criminal proceedings, the allegations must be proven in court, and Gadd is presumed innocent of these new charges unless and until convicted.
