ANNAPOLIS, Md. โ€” Maryland is preparing for one of its biggest Independence Day celebrations in recent memory as communities from the mountains of Western Maryland to the Atlantic coast host fireworks, parades, concerts, festivals and family activities honoring both the Fourth of July and America’s 250th anniversary celebration. State officials are encouraging residents and visitors to enjoy the holiday safely while exploring the many events taking place throughout the long weekend.

Across every region of the state, cities, towns and parks are offering opportunities to celebrate America’s birthday with live entertainment, local food, historical programs and dazzling fireworks displays.


NOTE:   Due to weather conditions and unforeseen circumstances, some of the activities below may be rescheduled or cancelled.  Please plan accordingly.

at Maryland State Parks with Fun Events Planned All Weekend

Maryland parks are hosting a variety of special events during the week of July 4 to mark the nationโ€™s 250th birthday celebration, including a tree planting, bike parade, historical reenactments, and kids crafts.

With parks open on Independence Day, Marylanders can start a new tradition by hiking, learn more about our nationโ€™s history by visiting park exhibits, or have a patriotic picnic. 

July 4 is a license-free fishing day. Any individual may catch and possess finfish for recreational purposes in any tidal and nontidal waters of Maryland. All anglers must follow current regulations, including size and catch limits found in the departmentโ€™s fishing and crabbing guide.

Please note that in order to prevent traffic backups and capacity closures, reservations are required at the following parks on July 4: Gunpowder Falls State Park (Hammerman Area), Greenbrier State Park, Point Lookout State Park, Newtowne Neck State Park, North Point State Park, Rocks State Parkโ€™s Kilgore Falls area, Rocky Gap State Park, Sandy Point Park, and Swallow Falls State Park. Reservations can be made at parkdayuse.maryland.gov

Stop by the visitorโ€™s center to play traditional games, like jacks, mancala or marbles. Learn to make traditional crafts such as yarn dolls.

Learn about the women and men who lived at Fort Frederick during the American Revolution through historic interpretation. The Fort was used to hold British prisoners during the war. Activities include musket-firing, military drills and childrenโ€™s drills.ย

Miles for Maryland, All State Parks, Year-Round
There is still time to get started on theย Maryland Park Service Miles for Maryland challenge. The goal is to hike 250 miles inside Maryland parks during the course of the year, one mile for each year since the founding of the United States. Submit photos from your hike for a chance to win prizes.ย

Remember that July 4 is Maryland’s annual license-free fishing day, allowing anyone to fish recreationally in Maryland’s tidal and non-tidal waters while following existing size and catch regulations. Officials also remind visitors that advance reservations are required at several of the state’s busiest parks to help manage holiday crowds.

Whether spending the weekend watching fireworks over Baltimore’s Inner Harbor, enjoying small-town celebrations, relaxing along the Chesapeake Bay, exploring Maryland’s scenic parks or participating in America 250 commemorative events, residents and visitors alike will find countless ways to celebrate the nation’s birthday.
