‘Adulting 101’ – the program parents have always wanted has arrived

When 36 students at Aberdeen High School rolled up their sleeves this fall, the classroom looked a little different – there were no desks, no textbooks, but plenty of engine oil. The Harford County school has launched “Adulting 101,” an after-school program designed to teach teens practical life skills that don’t appear on most report cards.
The first session, held in late October, focused on vehicle maintenance. Students learned how to check tire pressure and tread depth, identify different engine fluids, read an oil dipstick, and even jump a dead battery – skills many young adults admit they wish they’d learned sooner.
“Providing students with opportunities to develop real-world skills like these helps build confidence and independence,” said Aberdeen High School Principal Erica Harris. “Our goal is to make learning meaningful beyond the classroom.”

The program, open to all students, will continue throughout the school year with sessions covering topics like budgeting, basic cooking, time management, and home maintenance – skills that educators say are essential for a smooth transition into adulthood.
Parents have taken notice. “I think this is fantastic,” said Melissa Grant, whose son is a junior at Aberdeen High. “Kids need to know how to take care of themselves before they head off to college or get their first apartment. This is what school should be teaching.”
Programs like Adulting 101 have been gaining traction nationwide as schools respond to calls from parents and students for more practical education. Similar courses in states like Minnesota, Kentucky, and Texas have taught everything from how to do laundry to how to file taxes, drawing large student turnouts and viral social media buzz.
For Aberdeen High, the enthusiasm is already revving up. “The students were excited to get their hands dirty,” said Principal Harris. “They walked away with skills – and confidence – that will last a lifetime.”
