Arrest made in July 2025 murder of Greenbelt man

(August 31, 2025)  On Friday, the Prince George’s County Police Department charged a suspect with a fatal shooting that occurred in late July in Laurel, Maryland. Police identified their suspect as 48-year-old James King IV of Laurel. He’s charged with the murder of 33-year-old William Denard Askew of Greenbelt.

Background: On July 25, 2025, at approximately 10:20 pm, officers responded to a shooting in the 13200 block of Laurel Bowie Road in the unincorporated section of Laurel. Officers located Askew in the roadway near the shooting scene, suffering from gunshot wounds. William Denard Askew died on the scene as a result of his injuries.

King has been charged with first and second-degree murder and related charges. He is currently in the custody of the Department of Corrections on a no-bond status. Police say that it’s unknown whether King and Askew knew each other prior to the shooting. King’s motive for the shooting still remains under investigation.
