(May 13, 2025) Yesterday, police in Maryland arrested and charged a suspect in connection with the fatal shooting of his friend on Saturday in Beltsville. The suspect is 18-year-old Kimaury Kamara of Mt. Holly Spring, Pennsylvania. He’s charged with manslaughter in connection with the fatal shooting of 16-year-old Derrick Palmer of Beltsville.

Maryland’s Prince George’s County Police Department is crediting their homicide unit with making the arrest.

Background: On May 10, 2025, at approximately 4:25 p.m., officers responded to a shooting at the victim’s home in the 11000 block of Heartwood Drive. The victim was located suffering from a gunshot wound. He died a short time later at a hospital.

The preliminary investigation revealed the suspect shot the victim while “playing with a gun,” according to police.

Maryland Bureau Chief Brad Bell’s sources tell 7News that Kamara put a “switched” gun to his friend’s head and pulled the trigger. Since the gun was switched, two shots were fired. ~ Fox 45 News

According to Fox 5 News in DC, Kamara told investigators he pointed the gun at Palmer “believing the handgun did not have a round in the chamber, pulled the trigger, striking in the head.”  Police say they also found several other guns in the room during a search.

After consulting with the Prince George’s County State’s Attorney’s Office, Kamara was charged with manslaughter and related charges. He is currently in the custody of the Department of Corrections.

Derrick Palmer was a junior attending John F. Kennedy High School. Anyone with information on this case who would like to speak to a Homicide Unit detective may call 301-516-2512.
