Baltimore: Arrest made in May 11 shooting murder of 23-year-old Taniya Gray

(May 29, 2025) Yesterday, police in Baltimore City announced the arrest of 22-year-old Tamal Johnson, a repeat violent offender from Baltimore, in connection with the homicide that went down in the Southwest District on May 11.   Homicide Detectives with the Baltimore Police Department discovered that Johnson was involved in the Mother’s Day killing of 23-year-old Taniya Gray in the 4100 block of Mountwood Road.

Background: On May 11, 2025, at approximately 10:41 a.m., Officers responded to the 4100 block of Mountwood Road to investigate the discharging of a firearm.  Upon their arrival, Officers located a 23-year-old female victim inside a vehicle suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to the body. The victim, later identified as Taniya Gray, was transported to an area hospital. Where she was unfortunately pronounced deceased by hospital staff.

Taniya Gray was found shot and lying in the backseat of a white Acura on Mountwood Road near Wildwood Parkway, according to police. Gray was mother to a young daughter, according to CBS News in Baltimore. 

Homicide Detectives responded and assumed control over the investigation and asked that anyone with information is urged to contact detectives at 410-396-2100.

On May 22, Warrant Apprehension detectives and the U.S. Marshals arrested Tamal Johnson in the 3000 block of Elizabeth Avenue. Johnson was taken to the Central Booking Intake Facility where he was charged with first-degree murder, second-degree murder, conspiracy, and various firearm offenses.

Johnson is currently being held without bail.
