(March 6, 2026) Pop superstar Britney Spears was arrested Wednesday night in Southern California on suspicion of driving under the influence, marking the first arrest for the 44-year-old singer after decades of intense public scrutiny over her personal life. According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), officers responded around 8:48 p.m. on March 4 to reports of a black BMW 430i traveling southbound on U.S. Highway 101 at a high rate of speed and driving erratically in Ventura County.
Her vehicle was pulled over near the Westlake Boulevard exit around 9:30 p.m. Authorities said Spears, who was the only occupant, showed signs of impairment and was asked to perform field sobriety tests before being arrested on suspicion of DUI involving a combination of alcohol and drugs.
Spears was booked shortly after 3 a.m. Thursday and released around 6 a.m., according to Ventura County jail records. Her vehicle was towed, and officials said chemical test results are pending as the investigation continues.
A representative for Spears called the arrest “an unfortunate incident that is completely inexcusable,” adding that the singer plans to comply with the law and take steps to improve her well-being. Spears is scheduled to appear in court on May 4.
“She is going to take the right steps and hopefully this can be the first step in long overdue change that needs to occur in Britney’s life,” the representative said, adding that her two sons will be spending time with her and loved ones are working on a plan to support her.
Previous Concerns About Her Driving
While Spears has rarely faced criminal charges, concerns about her driving have surfaced before. In October 2025, video circulated online showing the singer allegedly swerving between lanes and tailgating vehicles after leaving a restaurant in Thousand Oaks. One witness claimed she nearly hit a friend while pulling out of a parking lot.
Britney later denied being behind the wheel, suggesting a “lookalike” may have been driving. Earlier controversies also include a widely criticized 2006 incident when she was photographed driving with her infant son on her lap, sparking public backlash.
Her Conservatorship Battle
Spears’ personal life has long been under intense public scrutiny, particularly during the 13-year conservatorship that controlled her finances, career and personal decisions.
The legal arrangement began in 2008 after a series of public mental-health crises, with her father, Jamie Spears, initially serving as conservator. The arrangement remained in place until November 2021, when a judge terminated it following the global #FreeBritney movement, which argued the singer was being unfairly controlled.
Spears later detailed her experiences during that period in her 2023 bestselling memoir, The Woman in Me.
A Global Pop Superstar
Born December 2, 1981, in McComb, Mississippi, and raised in Louisiana, Britney rose to global fame in the late 1990s with her debut single “…Baby One More Time.” She quickly became one of the defining pop artists of her generation.
Often dubbed the “Princess of Pop,” Spears has released numerous chart-topping hits including “Oops!… I Did It Again,” “Toxic,” “Womanizer,” and “I’m a Slave 4 U.” She won a Grammy Award in 2004 for Best Dance Recording for “Toxic” and has sold tens of millions of records worldwide.
In recent weeks, Spears also made headlines after reportedly selling the rights to her music catalog for about $200 million.
Authorities say the DUI case remains under investigation pending toxicology results. Spears is scheduled to face the charge in Ventura County court on May 4, where prosecutors will determine whether to formally pursue DUI counts based on the test results.
Meanwhile, representatives say the singer’s family and close friends are working on a support plan aimed at stabilizing her personal life following the arrest.
