On September 19, Florida’s Broward Shariff’s Office announced that a grand jury had indicted two men in connection with a 2019 murder in Pompano Beach.  One of the murder suspects is already in custody and the second suspect was recently located in another county.

Background:  Just after 3 a.m. on Friday, December 20, 2019, Broward Sheriff’s Office (BSO) deputies were dispatched to 327 S.W. Second Court in Pompano Beach and found an adult male who had been shot and was unresponsive. Pompano Beach Fire Rescue transported the victim, identified as 32-year-old Clarens Calixte, to Broward Health North where he was pronounced deceased.

During their murder investigation, homicide detectives were able to identify the two suspects after piecing together evidence that ultimately led to the grand jury indictments of Benson Blaise and Derrick Jules.

Following the indictment, Blaise, who was already in BSO’s Main Jail on unrelated charges, was formally charged and booked in connection with the case. On Wednesday, September 10, in coordination with the U.S. Marshals Service, members of BSO’s V.I.P.E.R. (Violence Intervention Proactive Enforcement Response) and the Fugitive unit successfully located Jules in Tampa. He was taken into custody without incident.

Both men are now looking at charges of first-degree murder with a firearm and robbery with a firearm stemming from the 2019 killing of Clarens Calixte.  They are both being held without bond.

The Sheriff’s Office also said that their investigation into this case remains ongoing.  Anyone with any information regarding this case is asked to call Broward County Crime Stoppers at 954-493-8477.  Callers may remain anonymous.
