In a dramatic fall from grace – as well as a fall from one of college football’s most visible sidelines – former University of Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore was charged Friday with felony home invasion, misdemeanor stalking within a domestic relationship, and misdemeanor breaking and entering – in connection with an incident that unfolded just hours after his abrupt dismissal from the Wolverines’ football program.

Moore, 39, once celebrated for leading Michigan to a winning season and breaking barriers as the program’s first Black head coach, appeared via video from the Washtenaw County Jail in a single-day hearing on December 12. A magistrate set his bond at $25,000, imposed GPS monitoring, ordered continued mental health treatment, prohibited all drug and alcohol use and also prohibited all contact with his alleged victim — a woman prosecutors say he had a long-term romantic relationship with.

The shocking sequence of events began earlier this week when the University of Michigan fired Moore “with cause” after an internal investigation found “credible evidence” he engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a staff member — a violation of university policy. Within hours of the dismissal, Moore was arrested in Pittsfield Township, a suburb of Ann Arbor, after police were called to investigate an alleged assault.

According to prosecutors, Moore entered the home of the woman he had been dating without permission, escalating a confrontation that led the alleged victim to call 911. Inside the residence, Moore reportedly grabbed kitchen utensils and made disturbing statements, including threatening self-harm and telling the woman “my blood is on your hands,” although officers say he did not directly threaten her with the utensils.

Aside:  Some online and social media accounts are linking the name Paige Shiver to the situation, identifying her as the staffer or executive assistant to Moore and suggesting the alleged incident occurred at her residence. However, this information has not been  confirmed by law enforcement or major news outlets; and the university has not publicly named her.

Prosecutors allege Moore’s behavior did not end with the couple’s breakup earlier in the week and that the alleged victim had reported unwanted contact and intimidation leading up to the incident. At the arraignment, court conditions also included surrendering any weapons and restrictions on travel, specifically not leaving the State without permission from the Court. His next court date is scheduled for January 22, 2026.

The University of Michigan’s athletic department swiftly named Biff Poggi as interim head coach for the Wolverines’ upcoming bowl game.

Late Saturday morning developments included confirmation that Moore posted his bond and was released from custody under court supervision late Friday, still subject to strict conditions including the GPS tether.  It’s worth noting that the third-degree felony home invasion charge against Moore is punishable by up to five years in prison, if convicted.
