Danville City Councilman doused in gasoline and set on fire

Just when you thought the strange world of violence and politics couldn’t get any stranger, a local city councilman in Danville, Virginia, gets doused in gasoline and set on fire – by someone he knew. The craziness went down yesterday at the victim’s Showcase Magazine office building.
Around 11:30 a.m. on July 30, officers with the Danville VA Police Department were dispatched to the 700 block of Main Street after receiving a report that a man had been set on fire. The victim in this violent incident was identified as 38-year-old Lee Vogler of Danville, who is a Danville City Councilman.
The Danville Fire Department and the Danville Life Saving Crew also responded to the scene to render aid. Vogler was airlifted to a regional medical facility for treatment. As of this writing, the full extent of his injuries is still unknown. The perpetrator of this violent attack has been identified as 29-year-old Shotsie Michael Buck Hayes – who is also a resident of Danville.

Based on witness information provided to officers at the scene, Hayes entered into Vogler’s place of employment, confronted him and then doused him in gasoline. Vogler and Hayes then both exited the building, where Hayes then set Vogler on fire.
Fox News reports that according to police and the Showcase Magazine owner, Hayes had forced his way into the building carrying a five-gallon can of gasoline. Police said Hayes poured the gasoline on Vogler as he tried to run to the front of the building and then lit him on fire.
Hayes fled the scene after setting Vogler on fire; but witnesses on the scene were able to provide descriptions of him and his vehicle to police. Officers located and stopped the vehicle several blocks from the incident and Hayes was taken into custody without incident. Hayes is still in custody.
Police report that Vogler and Hayes are known to each other and that the attack stemmed from a personal matter not related to the victim’s position on Danville City Council or any other political affiliation.
Later in the day yesterday, the Danville Police Department charged Shotsie Michael Buck Hayes with attempted first-degree murder and aggravated malicious wounding following his attack by burning on Lee Vogler. Â Hayes is being held in the Danville City Jail under no bond. Police went on to add that their investigation remains under investigation and that no further information will be released at this time.
