(December 15, 2025) Hollywood and the world are left stunned and reeling after acclaimed director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, were found dead on Sunday afternoon in their Brentwood, California home. Police in Los Angeles are treating their deaths as a double homicide.

โ€œIt is with profound sorrow that we announce the tragic passing of Michele and Rob Reiner. We are heartbroken by this sudden loss, and we ask for privacy during this unbelievably difficult time,โ€ his family said in a statement to Variety.

Firefighters with the Los Angeles Fire Department responded around 3:30 p.m. PST on December 14 to a medical-aid call at the residence in the 250 block of Chadbourne Avenue. Upon their arrival, first responders discovered the couple dead inside the home with injuries consistent with stab wounds, according to law enforcement sources. The coupleโ€™s adult daughter, Romy Reiner, reportedly found the bodies, according to multiple accounts.

While the Los Angeles Police Departmentโ€™s Robbery-Homicide Division has taken over the investigation, police have not yet made an arrest or publicly identified an official suspect.

However, multiple sources close to the family have told People that the coupleโ€™s son, Nick Reiner, is being questioned and is the alleged perpetrator in the deadly stabbings. As of this writing, authorities have not confirmed those details publicly, and no one is in custody.

In addition to People, social media reports are filled with multiple sources claiming that Nick murdered his parents.

Rob Reiner, 78, was one of Hollywoodโ€™s most enduring creative voices across television and film. Rising to fame in the 1970s for his Emmy-winning portrayal of Mike โ€œMeatheadโ€ Stivic on All in the Family, Reiner later became a celebrated film director and producer. His directorial works include beloved classics such as This Is Spinal Tap (1984), Stand by Me (1986), The Princess Bride (1987), When Harry Met Sallyโ€ฆ (1989), Misery (1990), and A Few Good Men (1992).

Reiner also co-founded Castle Rock Entertainment, a production company behind some of television and cinemaโ€™s most influential titles. Beyond his creative work, he was a political activist, advocating for civil rights, early childhood development, and marriage equality, per The Associated Press.

Michele Singer Reiner, 68, was known for her work in photography, her supportive presence in arts communities, and her activism alongside her husband. The couple married in 1989 and had three children together.

The LAPD has said little publicly as their investigation continues, emphasizing that it is an active homicide case with few details released so far. Officers with the Robbery-Homicide Division are leading the effort. Public officials and celebrities have reacted with shock and sorrow.

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass described the news as โ€œa devastating loss for our city and our country,โ€ while California Governor Gavin Newsom praised Reinerโ€™s โ€œboundless empathyโ€ and artistic contributions. Former President Barack Obama and Vice President Kamala Harris also issued statements of tribute.

Michelle and I are heartbroken by the tragic passing of Rob Reiner and his beloved wife, Michele. Robโ€™s achievements in film and television gave us some of our most cherished stories on screen. But beneath all of the stories he produced was a deep belief in the goodness of peopleโ€”and a lifelong commitment to putting that belief into action. Together, he and his wife lived lives defined by purpose. They will be remembered for the values they championed and the countless people they inspired. We send our deepest condolences to all who loved them.  ~ Barack Obama, Facebook

Early evening crowds of friends and peers โ€” including actors and comedians who worked with Reiner โ€” gathered near the scene Sunday, visibly shaken.
