Discovered locked inside Milwaukee storage unit: Six young kids, ages two months to nine years

Strange and troubling news is coming out of Milwaukee as it’s widely reported that on Tuesday morning, September 16, 2025, Milwaukee police made a disturbing discovery when they found six children locked inside a storage unit on the city’s Northwest side. The children, ranging in age from two months to nine years, were rescued unharmed; but the incident has sparked a criminal investigation into potential child abuse and neglect.
Timeline and Discovery: At approximately 1:36 a.m., officers responded to a report of children trapped inside a unit at a local storage facility located at 27th Street and Silver Spring Drive on the city’s Northwest Side. ABC News reports that upon their arrival, police discovered six children: a 2-month-old infant, plus five more children aged 2, 3, 5, 7, and 9 years old.
Fire crews had to be called to assist with forced entry into the unit, which was locked from the outside.
One neighbor told WTMJ they had seen what appeared to be a family with children walking in and around the storage unit since the summer. The neighbor said she saw the group leaving every morning and coming back at night.
Arrests and Investigation: Two adults—a 26-year-old woman and a 33-year-old man—were arrested at the scene. Their identities have not yet been released, and charges are pending review by the Milwaukee County District Attorney’s Office, according to USA Today. The Milwaukee Police Department has classified the case as one of child abuse and neglect, and the investigation remains active.
Community Reaction: Local residents expressed shock and heartbreak over the incident. Tonya Lowe, a nearby resident, told reporters, “We have failed these kids. We don’t need to be cruel and treat our kids like animals and lock them in places they don’t deserve to be put in.”
“I’m confused. I don’t even know how to respond to it,” a man from the area told ABC News affiliate WISN. “To me, this sounds like a cry for help, maybe they just needed help and didn’t know how to get it.”
Support Services: The Milwaukee County Department of Health and Human Services has stepped in to provide services and support for the children. MSN reported that No injuries were reported, and authorities are working to ensure the children’s safety and well-being moving forward.
As of this writing, no charges against the arrested couple have been filed. We still can’t say for certain whether this is indeed a case of child neglect – or a troubling sign of our times about a family in dire need of assistance.
