Florida woman charged with murdering her 97-year-old mom, claiming ‘mercy killing’

A West Palm Beach, Florida, caregiver / daughter is facing first-degree murder charges after authorities allege she suffocated her 97-year-old mother — reportedly after their request for assisted suicide was denied by a physician.
According to the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, on December 26 deputies responded to a home in the 2800 block of Ashley Drive following a 911 call regarding a death investigation. Once on the scene, investigators found 97-year-old Patricia Blake deceased in her residence. Officials later learned that she suffered from Parkinson’s disease and a thyroid disorder,
An autopsy by the Palm Beach County Medical Examiner’s Office determined that Blake’s death was not consistent with natural causes. The examination reportedly uncovered internal hemorrhaging and injuries consistent with suffocation and a broken neck, findings that prompted investigators to classify the death as a homicide. ~ WFTV
Authorities arrested 66-year-old Martha Jo Blake, Patricia’s daughter and primary caregiver for the past five years, on a charge of first-degree murder. Court records and probable cause affidavits indicate Martha Jo initially told deputies her mother had died of disease complications, but later admitted the pair had long discussed “death with dignity,” a term often associated with physician-assisted suicide.
According to the affidavit, Martha Jo and her mother had approached Patricia’s doctor in Maine about assisted suicide around 18 months prior, but were told she did not qualify because she did not meet that state’s criteria for a terminal illness. In Maine and many other jurisdictions where physician-assisted dying is legal, candidates must typically have a prognosis of six months or fewer to live — a requirement not met by Blake’s medical conditions.
Martha Jo reportedly told authorities that, after being denied legal assistance, she and her mother discussed other methods, including taking pills, but didn’t have access to anything lethal. Deputies say they also found clothing and socks in a trash bag at the home believed to be connected to the death, which were collected as evidence.

Florida does not allow physician-assisted suicide; and the case has drawn attention to the legal and ethical challenges families face when caring for loved ones with chronic, debilitating illnesses. Attorneys for Blake have not publicly commented, and she remains held without bail pending further proceedings.
Martha Jo Blake’s next court appearance is scheduled for January 27, 2026.
Opinion: The case has raised questions regarding “mercy killing” versus murder under Florida law, where physician-assisted suicide is illegal – while highlighting an intersection of elder care, end-of-life decision-making, and the limits of current state law. But in the opinion of Ace News Today, the violent methods used in this elderly mom’s death do not meet our criteria of a “mercy killing”
