(June 13, 2025) At 5:00 a.m. on June 12, officers of the Hagerstown Police Department responded to the 700 block of Forrest Drive for a domestic violence-related call. When police arrived on the scene, ย the male suspect inside the house fired a round at one of the officers, striking him once in the arm. The officer is currently undergoing surgery, and his injuries are considered non-life threatening.
By 9:30 a.m., the officer was out of surgery and in recovery, but the male shooting suspect remained armed and holed up inside the residence. At about 4:35 p.m., a Crisis Negotiation Team successfully negotiated the suspect out of the house. The suspect has since been identified as 40-year-old Daniel Matthew Anderson of Hagerstown.
More background on the case: Officers initially responded to the house at approximately 5:00 a.m. for a report of a domestic violence assault.
Andersonโs wife allowed officers into the house and she had clear signs of being assaulted. There were also two children in the home at the time who were physically unharmed. An ambulance was called to the scene and the mother and children were placed in the ambulance.
As the mother was being attended to in the ambulance, officers were inside attempting to communicate with Anderson who was in a room with the door closed and locked. Due to the domestic assault, Anderson was going to be placed under arrest but refused to come out from behind the locked door. Officers continued to speak with him through the door and he continued to refuse to exit.
One of the officers announced that he would be forcing the door open. Having probable cause to do so, the officer made entry into the room. As he did, Anderson fired a round from a shotgun striking the officer in the arm and penetrating his bicep. The officer immediately starting bleeding profusely and both officers exited the residence.
They went immediately to the ambulance that was still waiting outside. The paramedics quickly tended to the wound and were enroute to the hospital within about 60 seconds. The mother in this incident was treated and released from Meritus.
The injured officer underwent surgery and is currently recovering at the hospital.
Numerous police resources were deployed to the scene and a command center was established. The Crisis Negotiation Team actively communicated with Anderson for eight hours. At approximately 4:35 p.m. Anderson walked out of his house and was placed into custody, unharmed.
Anderson was transported to the Washington County Detention Center and charged.
At the request of the injured officer, his name will not be released at this time. He is a 19-year veteran of the Hagerstown Police Department. We are grateful for his service and thankful that he wasnโt more seriously injured.
The officer is recovering and is in good spirits.
