On October 19, the Bladensburg Police Department shared the horrific news of a hit and run car crash that occurred in Bladensburg, Maryland, Saturday, October 18.  A car crashed into a children’s outdoor birthday party injuring adults and children, leaving one person dead. Bladensburg is in Prince George’s County and about six miles outside of Washington, D.C.

Background:  At approximately 10:14 PM, Bladensburg Police Officers were dispatched to the 4100 block of 56th Avenue for a motor vehicle collision that resulted in numerous injuries. A vehicle that traveled from the area of Annapolis Road struck several individuals that were gathered in front of a residence for a child’s birthday party.

There were 11 people transported to local hospitals, including three to Capital Regional Medical Center, one to Howard University Hospital, and seven children to Children’s Hospital. The injured children ranged in age from one-year-old to 17-years-old.

Following the collision, the driver of the vehicle that plowed into the outdoor party abandoned his wrecked car and fled the scene on foot. At that time, the identity of the hit and run driver was not yet known.

The Bladensburg Police Department announced that they would be the primary agency in charge of the investigation and said that Annapolis Road from 57th Avenue to Landover Road was closed due to their initial investigation. Prince George’s County Police officers were also on the scene assisting.

Several hours later, officials announced that the hit and run crash had resulted in at least one fatality, 31-year-old Ashley Hernandez Gutierrez of Washington, D.C. The hit and run driver was also identified as a 66-year-old man from Washington, D.C.

Of the 14 victims, eight are children ranging in age from 1-to-17-years-old. Six of these children have been treated and released, while one has been admitted and in stable condition. All of the children are expected to survive.

There were six adult victims, including Gutierrez. As of yesterday, three of the adults were admitted to the hospital and are in stable condition, one is pending treatment, and one has been released.

One neighbor told 7News she is still distraught after learning about all of the victims in this case.

“I cried all night long. I’m still crying,” said Bobbie Brown. “To hurt that many people and babies? I heard that mother crying for her baby. I didn’t realize babies was out there with them, and that is really very, very sad.”  ~ ABC-7 News

According to police, the driver of the striking vehicle had turned himself in and was immediately interviewed by a crash investigator. Consultation with the Prince George’s County State’s Attorney is currently underway and criminal charges are pending against the driver.

The victims of the collision were updated to include eight children ranging from one year of age to 17 years of age, and six adults which includes the decedent. As of yesterday, six of the juvenile victims were treated and released, and one has been admitted in stable condition. Three adult victims have been admitted to the hospital and are in stable condition, one is pending treatment, and one has been released.
