(January 31, 2026) Lindsey Vonn’s pursuit of glory in her final World Cup before retiring (for a second time) hit a bump on Friday, January 30, when the 41-year-old American skiing legend crashed during a downhill race in Crans-Montana, Switzerland. Racing in challenging low-visibility conditions, Vonn lost control on a tricky section of the course, resulting in a fall that prompted immediate concern. The race was halted following multiple crashes by athletes, but Vonn’s fall appeared to be the most severe.

Vonn — the third skier to crash in the World Cup race in Crans-Montana — lost control when landing a jump and ended up tangled in the safety nets on the upper portion of the course.

She got up after receiving medical attention for about 5 minutes, seemingly in pain and using her poles to steady herself. Vonn then skied slowly to the finish line, stopping a couple of times on the way down and clutching her left knee.  ~ CNN

After the crash, Vonn was able to limp off the slope, though her team and medical personnel took no chances. She was airlifted to a nearby hospital for precautionary checks. The skiing icon later confirmed that the injuries were not as serious as initially feared, but she opted to skip Saturday’s Super-G race to focus on her recovery in time for the upcoming Milano Cortina Games.

“I’ve had my share of comebacks, and this is no different,” Vonn posted on social media, showing her resilient spirit. “It’s not over until it’s over.” The post, which included an image of Vonn on crutches, drew an outpouring of support from fans and fellow athletes, including Mikaela Shiffrin, who expressed admiration for her strength and determination.

Despite her setback, Vonn remains hopeful regarding her recovery, and her team has indicated that her focus is already shifting toward the February 8 downhill event at the Milano Cortina Games. Vonn has an extraordinary history of overcoming injuries and major setbacks throughout her career, including a number of surgeries. Given her track record of resilience, it’s not surprising that she’s eyeing a return to competition just days after the crash.

In a statement issued through her medical team, it was confirmed that Vonn is dealing with some bruising and a mild sprain, but that there was no significant damage to her knees or other critical areas. She has already started rehabilitation and is being monitored closely by her medical staff.

“While the conditions in Crans-Montana were tough for all competitors, Lindsey’s health and safety are our top priority. She’s been through much worse and come back stronger every time,” Vonn’s team said. “She is determined to be back in action in Milano Cortina.”

The skiing legend is hoping to make a strong return for the February 8 downhill race in Milano Cortina, a pivotal moment in this World Cup season. With 82 World Cup wins to her name and a legacy as one of the sport’s all-time greats, Vonn’s journey isn’t over yet.

Here’s hoping for a speedy and complete recovery for Lindsey Vonn.
