A man suspected of carrying out a series of alarming overnight highway shootings in Prince George’s County is now in custody, following a multi-agency investigation that began with gunfire reported along busy Maryland roadways.  The incidents unfolded late March 16 into the early hours of March 17, when three separate shootings were reported within a span of just a few hours. Investigators believe all were connected.

The first shooting was reported around 10:35 p.m. on northbound Maryland Route 5 near Allentown Road, where a driver told police their vehicle had been struck by gunfire. No injuries were reported.

Minutes later, just before 10:50 p.m., a second motorist came under fire on the ramp from northbound Route 5 to the outer loop of Interstate 495/95. According to investigators, a man standing on the shoulder near a parked vehicle opened fire on a passing car, again striking it. The driver was not injured.

The third and most serious incident occurred shortly before 1:30 a.m. on southbound I-495/95 near Ardwick Ardmore Road. In that case, a driver reported that he was shot through his vehicle and later drove himself to a hospital for treatment of his injuries.

Maryland State Police, including homicide and highway gun crime investigators, responded to all three scenes, working alongside Prince George’s County Police and forensic teams to gather evidence. Authorities determined that the shootings were carried out by the same suspect, prompting a public appeal for information and a description of a possible red or burgundy Dodge sedan.

That break came the following afternoon. At approximately 2:00 p.m. on March 17, Prince George’s County Police conducted a high-risk traffic stop in the 2300 block of Oxon Run Drive in Temple Hills on a Dodge Challenger matching the suspect vehicle description. The driver was identified as 44-year-old Kendrick Lamont Savoy of Lothian, Maryland.

Maryland State Police units responded to the scene and conducted a search of the vehicle, where two handguns were recovered. Savoy was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Prince George’s County Detention Center.

He now faces a lengthy list of charges, including five counts each of attempted first- and second-degree murder and first-degree assault, as well as multiple firearm-related offenses, including use of a firearm in a violent felony and possession of a stolen firearm.

WTOP reports that Savoy is being held without bond in the Prince George’s County jail. Authorities have not released a possible motive, and the investigation remains ongoing.
