‘Man of Tomorrow’: James Gunn confirms 2027 cinematic sequel to ‘Superman’

(September 4, 2025) Yesterday, writer-producer James Gunn announced that the sequel to his successful film reboot of Superman will be titled Man of Tomorrow and is set for release on July 9, 2027.
James Gunn, who co-leads DC Studios with producer Peter Safran, has been steering the franchise since their appointment in late 2022. Their leadership marked a strategic shift for DC, aiming to unify its cinematic universe across film, TV, and animation.
David Corenswet’s portrayal of Superman in the 2025 film received generally positive reviews. Critics praised his warmth, humanity, and fresh take on the iconic hero, though some felt the film’s narrative lacked depth and coherence. Despite some mixed critical reception, the film performed well commercially, grossing over $600 million globally and becoming the highest-grossing superhero film of 2025.
But, the film was not without controversy. Gunn’s framing of Superman as an immigrant sparked backlash from conservative commentators, who labeled the film “Superwoke.” Gunn defended the theme, emphasizing kindness and inclusivity as central to the story.
With Man of Tomorrow, Gunn and Safran aim to deepen the DC Universe, continuing their vision of emotionally resonant, socially aware storytelling. DC Studios, under Gunn and Peter Safran, is charting an ambitious course for the future of its cinematic universe. Following the announcement of Superman: Man of Tomorrow, set for release on July 9, 2027, the studio has laid out a roadmap that spans at least the next 10 years.
Before Man of Tomorrow arrives, two major films will expand the DC Universe: Supergirl, starring Milly Alcock, is slated for summer 2026, and Clayface, featuring Tom Rhys Harries, will debut in September 2026. These films are expected to build narrative threads that feed directly into the Superman sequel.
Beyond Supergirl and Clayface, DC Studios has confirmed several other projects, including:
- The Authority, a darker ensemble superhero film.
- The Brave and the Bold, which will introduce a new Batman and Robin.
- Swamp Thing, exploring the horror side of the DC Universe.
- An untitled Wonder Woman film.
- A potential Sgt. Rock movie, which remains in development limbo.
Gunn’s vision emphasizes interconnected storytelling, emotional depth, and genre diversity. With the success of Superman (2025), which grossed over $600 million globally, DC Studios appears poised to rival Marvel’s dominance with a fresh, unified cinematic approach.
