Millersville teen arrested in hit-and-run during illegal street race where his car hit a spectator

This week, the Prince George’s County Police Department’s Homeland Security – Intelligence Division identified and charged a teen driver for assaulting and seriously injuring a woman at a recent illegal car street racing event in Landover, Maryland. The suspect, now in custody, has been identified as 18-year-old Naef Salmo of Millersville.
Background: On September 14 at approximately 1:45 am, the illegal “car meetup / vehicle takeover” was held at a shopping center parking lot in the 8500 block of Landover Road in the Landover area. Police described those events known as “vehicle takeovers” as large, unauthorized gatherings where participants often engage in reckless and illegal activities such as street racing, stunt driving and other disruptive activities.
Investigators learned that during this illegal takeover, while spinning circles in his car, Salmo struck a female spectator. He then fled the scene. The victim was transported to a hospital with serious injuries. She has since been released.
It didn’t take long for detectives to identify and locate both the striking vehicle and the driver, Naef Salmo. Their investigation revealed that after the hit-and-run, Salmo sprayed painted his vehicle a different color to conceal evidence and hinder detectives. Investigators also recovered a handgun under the hood of the car.
Following his arrest, Salmo was charged with a long list of charges to include second degree assault, reckless endangerment, disorderly conduct, riot and obstructing and hindering a police officer. Additional charges are pending. Salmo has admitted to his responsibility for the hit-and-run.
“We know these illegal vehicle takeovers may seem harmless to some, but the fact is, they can be dangerous. In this case, a young woman suffered serious injuries. We’ve also investigated a fatal shooting at a car takeover in recent years,” said Chief George Nader.
