A Naples woman, 69-year-old Yvonne Pepper, was arrested and charged with felony aggravated animal cruelty after her dog, “Gremlin,” suffered from extreme neglect that ultimately led to its death, according to the Collier County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO).

The incident has drawn sharp criticism from law enforcement, who called the dog’s death a heartbreaking case of preventable suffering.

“It is heartbreaking to know Gremlin suffered pain that could have been prevented,” said Collier County Sheriff Kevin Rambosk. “No animal should ever endure unnecessary suffering, and we will continue to hold individuals accountable when they fail to provide even the most basic level of care.”

The 11-year-old Pomeranian mix, Gremlin, was found in dire condition after the Collier County Animal Control received a concerning report from a local veterinarian. The small dog was unable to walk or stand and had recently stopped eating. According to the vet, Gremlin was suffering from a range of severe medical issues, many of which were preventable with proper care, including routine grooming and dental attention.

The list of medical problems Gremlin endured was shocking:

  • Rotted teeth
  • Overgrown nails
  • Severe matting of fur
  • Ulcers in both eyes and on the underside of all four paws
  • Pressure sores on both elbows
  • A skin infection, and
  • An open wound under his jaw from the matting of fur

The prolonged neglect led to a serious infection, ultimately causing sepsis. While receiving medical care, Gremlin went into cardiac arrest and died.

On Tuesday, CCSO detectives visited the home of Yvonne Pepper to investigate further. What they discovered was equally disturbing: the home was littered with dog feces, an overpowering smell of urine, and a large pile of dog fur had accumulated in one corner.

Pepper admitted she had been overwhelmed by personal issues and had neglected to get medical care for her dog, even as Gremlin’s health deteriorated.

Pepper was arrested and charged with felony aggravated animal cruelty, a third-degree felony in Florida. If convicted, she faces up to five years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000. Additional penalties could include a mandatory fine of $2,500 for intentional torture, counseling or anger management, and a minimum six-month jail sentence for repeat offenders.

This case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of responsible pet ownership. When individuals neglect their animals, it’s not just an act of indifference — it’s cruelty. ~ Ace News Today
