On July 3, law enforcement officials in Jacksonville shared a frightening and heroic story of a nine-year-old child who had been dragged into a stranger’s car and abducted – but rescued thanks to the quick and brave actions of a Good Samaritan who happened to witness the event.

On Friday, June 27, patrol officers responded to Northwest Jacksonville after 911 operators received a disturbing call. A nine-year-old boy was selling water along the roadside when a woman, later identified as 22-year-old Mikaya Williams, stopped and tried to lure him into her car. When he refused, she got out, pulled the child into her vehicle, and drove off.

A family friend of the victim witnessed the kidnapping as it happened and followed the suspect’s vehicle to West 45th Street. When it stopped, the witness acted quickly, removing the child from the car and blocking the vehicle in until officers arrived.

Williams was arrested on scene, and the child was safely returned to his family. Special Assault Unit detectives took over the investigation and arrested Williams for Kidnapping, a first-degree felony.  She remains behind bars at the Duval County Jail without bond.

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office thanked the heroic witness who stepped in and rescued the child from a dangerous situation.  Officials once again reminded the public that, “If you see something, say something.”
