On Tuesday morning, August 12, residents living in Florida’s Treasure Coast awoke to the news that Interstate-95 was shut down in both directions in Ft. Pierce.  TV newscasters were at a loss for a reason why the major thoroughfare was closed – but sounded the alarm as it adversely affected the morning rush hour traffic and was happening on the second day of the new school year in South Florida. As time dragged on Tuesday morning, we heard that police activity happening on I-95 was the cause for the shutdown.

Later in the day we learned that the Interstate had opened after a seven-hour standoff between police and a wanted murder suspect.  That standoff ended with the suspect being shot and killed by law enforcement officials.

Background:  The suspect was wanted in connection with his alleged murdering of a woman who was found shot in her West Palm Beach home on Monday night, according to WPBF.  Her killer entered the home through a back sliding door – and in front of the victim’s daughter – fired multiple rounds at the woman before fleeing the scene in a black SUV.  The victim was pronounced dead later at a Palm Beach County hospital.

On August 11, 2025, at approximately 10:56 p.m., the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office (SLCSO) received a BOLO for a black Honda traveling northbound on Interstate 95. The occupant was a suspect in a homicide that occurred earlier in the evening in West Palm Beach and was considered armed and dangerous.

SLCSO deputies, in coordination with Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) and the Martin County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO), established strategic positions alongside I-95. At approximately 11:15 p.m., FHP conducted a successful PIT maneuver near the 130-mile marker, bringing the suspect’s vehicle to a stop.

The suspect exited with a firearm pointed at his own head. Interstate 95 was shut down between Orange Avenue and Okeechobee Road for public safety.

The Martin County Sheriff’s Office Aviation Unit provided aerial support while SLCSO Crisis Negotiators and SWAT were deployed. Over the course of the next two hours, the suspect intermittently communicated with negotiators, repeatedly exiting and re-entering his vehicle while armed. Despite continued efforts to de-escalate, the suspect advanced toward deputies with a firearm at approximately 1:13 a.m. on August 12, 2025.

Use of rubber bullets were employed but were unsuccessful in stopping the suspects advancement. Reportedly, the rubber bullets did make the suspect drop his gun momentarily – but he picked it back up and began advancing toward the deputies in a threatening manner.

Law enforcement officers discharged their weapons, striking the suspect. St. Lucie County Fire District Rescue, already staged nearby, immediately responded and rendered aid. The suspect was pronounced dead at 1:22 a.m.

“This was a tragic and emotionally charged situation, but our deputies and troopers acted with professionalism, courage, and discipline in the face of a dangerous and armed suspect,” said Sheriff Richard Del Toro. “No law enforcement officer wants a situation to end this way, but their actions undoubtedly prevented further harm to the public and to themselves.”

“Four of our deputies were involved in the shooting,” Del Toro said.  Additionally, two state troopers fired rifles, and a third trooper fired a handgun, according to Local 10.

The fatal shooting on I-95 remains under active investigation. For more on the story, see the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office press conference that followed the police standoff.
