Rare astronomical phenomenon, the ‘Black Moon,’ peaks tonight
(August 23, 2025) Tonight’s “Black Moon” is a rare lunar event that refers to an unusual occurrence of a New Moon, which is the phase when the Moon is positioned between the Earth and the Sun, rendering it invisible from Earth. There are several definitions, but the most common are:
- Monthly Black Moon: The second New Moon in a single calendar month (occurs approximately every 29 months).
- Seasonal Black Moon: The third New Moon in a season that has four New Moons instead of the usual three (occurs about every 33 months).
Unlike the bright glow of a full moon that we see illuminated by the sun, a new moon is actually the opposite, in that we see the other side that is not illuminated by the sun, and so, a new moon is completely dark.
When is August new moon 2025? The August new moon, known as the black moon, will occur on Saturday, Aug. 23, 2025 at 2:06 a.m. ET. It will be visible or “invisible” on Friday and Saturday nights. ~ Northjersey.com
According to CNN, the term “Black Moon” is not officially recognized in astronomy and likely evolved from the more familiar “Blue Moon.” It gained popularity through folklore, Wiccan traditions, and social media.
The current Black Moon will occur on August 23, 2025, and it is a seasonal Black Moon.
This year’s Black Moon creates ideal conditions for stargazing, as the absence of moonlight darkens the sky, enhancing visibility of stars, planets, and meteor showers like the Perseids.
Viewing Tips:
- Head to a dark-sky location away from city lights.
- Let your eyes adjust to the darkness for 20–30 minutes.
- Use binoculars or a telescope for deep-sky objects.
The next Black Moon won’t be seen again until August 31, 2027.
