Sen. Elissa Slotkin’s home targeted in bomb threat after urging troops to ‘refuse illegal orders’

(November 22, 2025) – Michigan U.S. Senator Elissa Slotkin was the target of a bomb threat yesterday at her Oakland County home, days after she appeared in a video urging U.S. military and intelligence personnel to refuse “illegal orders.” State and federal law enforcement are investigating the matter, while Slotkin’s office decried the threat amid a highly polarized political climate.
According to WNEM, the Michigan State Police responded on Friday evening to a reported bomb threat at Slotkin’s residence. A spokesperson for the senator confirmed she was not home at the time, and the property was searched with no danger found.
Slotkin’s office said, “Senator Slotkin is deeply grateful for the swift and professional response by Oakland County and Michigan State Police,” and noted that U.S. Capitol Police would continue investigating.
As reported by The Independent, the threat follows a dramatic escalation in back-and-forth political rhetoric between Donald Trump and several Democratic U.S. politicians. Just one day earlier, Trump posted on his Truth Social platform that Slotkin and five other Democratic lawmakers were engaging in “SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, punishable by DEATH!

Earlier this week, Slotkin and five other Democratic lawmakers — all veterans or former intelligence community members — released a short video titled “Don’t Give Up the Ship.” In the video, they address active-duty military and intelligence service members, warning that threats to the U.S. Constitution may now come from “within” and urging them to “refuse illegal orders.”
The group in the video includes Sen. Slotkin (D-MI), Sen. Mark Kelly (D-AZ), Reps. Jason Crow (D-CO), Chris Deluzio (D-PA), Chrissy Houlahan (D-PA), and Maggie Goodlander (D-NH). Slotkin, a former CIA analyst, has defended the message, framing it as a reaffirmation of the military oath to uphold the Constitution, according to Yahoo! News.

Because of the heated rhetoric and threats, Slotkin says she is now under 24/7 protection by Capitol Police. She has vowed not to be intimidated, calling on political leaders to tone down violent rhetoric.
Slotkin’s office said she remains “resolute” in defending the Constitution, even in the face of threats. Whether the investigation into the bomb threat leads to any arrests or charges, the episode has already become a symbol of how volatile and dangerous the current political environment is — especially when powerful institutions like the military are invoked in partisan conflict.
