Ten inmates, some held on murder charges, escape from New Orleans jail

On May 16, 2025, 10 inmates from the Orleans Parish Jail escaped in New Orleans, prompting a full-scale manhunt and heightened security across the region. The daring escape occurred around 1:00 a.m., when the inmates exploited a structural weakness behind a toilet, exited through a loading dock, and scaled the perimeter wall using blankets to bypass barbed wire. Surveillance footage revealed that the escapees may have received inside help.

Also on May 16. at the request of the New Orleans Police Department, FBI New Orleans surged resources to assist with apprehending the escaped inmates The FBI routinely offers assistance to law enforcement partners, to provide additional manpower and specialized resources. The FBI is offering a reward of up to $5,000 for tips leading to the arrest of any of the inmates. 

As of the latest update, three inmates—Kendell Myles, Robert Moody, and Dkenan Dennis—have been recaptured. Myles, charged with attempted second-degree murder, was found hiding under a car in the French Quarter.

Seven inmates remain at large, including four men — Corey Boyd, Lenton Vanburen, Jermaine Donald and Derrick Groves — who are charged with second-degree murder, officials said, according to ABC News.

The Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office has acknowledged serious security lapses, including faulty locks and possible staff complicity. NBC News reports that the Orleans Parish Justice Center said Friday it has suspended three employees after the 10 inmates escaped.

It is unclear what roles the employees played in the escape; however, Sheriff Susan Hutson did say it was believed the escaped inmates received help from someone inside the jail.
