A Thanksgiving Day family outing could have turned tragic when a 12-year-old girl was buried under the sand after the large hole she was digging collapsed around her.  Fortunately, thanks to swift action from her father and local first responders, the child was rescued and emerged from that hole unharmed.

Background: Just before 5 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day 2025, a family was digging in the sand along a sandbar on the west bank of Panther Creek near a pedestrian bridge along Spring Creek Trail in The Woodlands, Texas. The girl had dug a large hole when the sand suddenly gave way, collapsing around her and burying her completely.

When first responders from multiple agencies in the area arrived on the scene, authorities said that only the girl’s head and face were visible above the sand.  The child’s quick acting father helped save the day and jumped into action immediately to clear sand away from her face – which allowed her to breathe and ultimately survive the ordeal until help arrived.

First responders aiding in the girl’s rescue included:

  • The Woodlands Fire Department,
  • South Montgomery County Fire Department,
  • Montgomery County Hospital District paramedics, and
  • Deputies from the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office.

Those responders quickly stabilized the area to prevent further collapse, then carefully removed the sand to extract the girl. After being evaluated by medics on scene, she was released to her parents — who declined transport her to a hospital.

Officials praised the coordinated response across four agencies, calling it “a near-tragedy turned into a Thanksgiving story that will be told for decades.”   ~ The Independent

Authorities noted that sand holes and sandbar collapses can be extremely dangerous, and warned that collapsing sand can quickly trap people, suffocating them if their head and airway are buried. Local officials cautioned families and trail-goers to avoid digging deep holes in sand along creek banks, especially near sandbars — and to always supervise children closely near water and sand.

A Facebook reader wrote in and reminded the Woodlands Fire Department that:

A young father died there almost ten years ago playing doing the exact same thing with his daughter. She ran for help but he was buried alive and gone.

Please people stop playing in the unstable sand/dunes in spring creek.

This incident serves as a timely reminder of the hazards that can lurk even during innocent family outings.  Everyone at Ace News Today is happy to hear that the child escaped a situation that could have turned fatal if not for the quick actions of those on the scene.

And here’s hoping that everyone had a safe and happy Thanksgiving!
