Trooper shoots woman after being stabbed during early morning incident on Miami Expressway
(March 8, 2026) A Florida Highway Patrol trooper shot and wounded a woman early Saturday morning after she allegedly stabbed him during a roadside encounter along State Road 836 in Miami-Dade County. The incident went down around 5:30 a.m. on March 7 after troopers received calls about a reckless driver traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes of State Road 836 near Northwest 107th Avenue.
Responding troopers located the vehicle stopped in the grassy center median of the expressway. When a trooper approached the car, he encountered a female driver and a young child inside the vehicle, according to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP).
Authorities said that while the trooper was speaking with the woman, she pulled out a knife and stabbed him multiple times, striking him in the head, neck and shoulder. The trooper then fired his service weapon, striking the woman.
Both the injured trooper and the woman were transported to HCA Kendall Trauma Center for treatment. Officials have not released details about the extent of their injuries but said both survived the encounter.
Investigators later determined the woman had active arrest warrants for child neglect, child abuse, and fleeing and eluding law enforcement. Once she is medically cleared from the hospital, she is expected to be booked into the Miami-Dade County Jail on those charges.
The young child who was inside the vehicle during the confrontation was taken into protective custody by the Florida Department of Children and Families. William Smith, a spokesperson for FHP, said that the trooper is lucky.
“We work by ourselves. We assist vehicles, whether they’re on the side of the road, in crashes, or during traffic stops. And you’re on defense. You walk up to the car, or even if they get out of the car, you’re on defense,” Smith said. ~ CBS Miami
Smith says the woman who was shot is in her early 40s, is from Virginia, and was in a rental car. He also said she had warrants for child neglect out of Georgia. Reportedly, the woman will be charged with child negligence, attempted murder of a law enforcement officer, and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon on a law enforcement officer.
As is standard procedure in officer-involved shootings in Florida, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) has opened an independent investigation into the trooper’s use of force. Authorities have not yet publicly released the names of those involved as the investigation remains active.
