In a striking political rupture, Donald Trump announced on November 14 that he is withdrawing his endorsement of Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, calling her a “ranting lunatic” and signaling he may back a primary challenger in her Georgia congressional district, according to CBS News and The Washington Post.

Interestingly, Greene, staunch Republican and current U.S. House Representative from Georgia, has long been one of Trump’s most ardent congressional defenders. First elected in 2020, she built her brand on far right-wing populism, conspiratorial rhetoric, and a reputation as a firebrand within the MAGA movement, according to Fox News.

Over the years, she has pushed controversial ideas, including once endorsing QAnon conspiracy theories, though she has more recently disavowed them. More recently though, she has evolved into a fierce critic of Republican party leadership, siding with Democrats at times.  She even voted to demand the release of documents related to Jeffrey Epstein’s investigation. Additionally, Greene broke from the GOP camp by condemning certain foreign aid policies and calling the humanitarian situation in Gaza a “genocide”, according to The Guardian.

The split between Trump and Greene seems to have boiled down to a growing pattern of public criticism of the president, and the party, from Greene. On his Truth Social site, Trump wrote that all he saw from her “was — COMPLAIN, COMPLAIN, COMPLAIN!” He also claimed she had become distant, saying she was upset that he stopped returning her phone calls.

Trump suggested the final straw came after he discouraged her from running for higher office. He said he had shared a poll with her that put her at just 12 percent for a potential Senate or gubernatorial run — and made clear he was not planning to endorse her for that, according to Breitbart.

Never one to hold back his personal feelings and criticisms, Trump labeled her “Wacky Marjorie” and claimed she had “gone Far Left,” even citing her recent appearance on The View — a daytime talk show he disparagingly characterized as having “low IQ Republican-hating anchors.”

Ultimately, Trump declared: “I am withdrawing my support and Endorsement … I understand that … if the right person runs, they will have my Complete and Unyielding Support” in a primary against her ~ Fox News

Also not one to hold back, Greene struck back at the president. On X, she accused Trump of lying and claimed his attack was intended to intimidate other Republicans ahead of a critical House vote. She pointed to her push for transparency in the Epstein case — specifically her role in a bipartisan discharge petition that would force a vote on making DOJ files public. She wrote that it was “astonishing really how hard he’s fighting to stop the Epstein files from coming out … he actually goes to this level.”

Al Jazeera shared Greene as saying she urged Trump to “lean into” the Epstein issue, arguing it was “for the women who were victims” and not a political stunt.

“I have supported President Trump with too much of my precious time, too much of my own money … But I don’t worship or serve Donald Trump … I worship God … and I serve my district GA-14 and the American people.”  ~ CBS News

Greene is on record as saying that her new political stance is in line with what her constituents want and those she serves back in Georgia. For more on the split between Trump and Greene, see the video below.
