Violent husband found guilty of beating wife, kidnapping her and their kids
(May 20, 2025) Earlier today, Florida’s Collier County Sherriff’s Office (CCSO), headquartered in Naples, Florida, announced that a 36-year-old man has been found guilty of kidnapping and assault in connection with a violent crime spree in 2023 that terrorized his wife and their four children across multiple counties and ended with the family’s rescue by CCSO deputies.
Antonio Caban faces up to life in prison at his sentencing on July 7 in Collier County Circuit Court.
“This case is a stark reminder of the dangers victims of domestic violence can face,” Sheriff Kevin Rambosk said. “I commend the victim for her courage and quick thinking in the face of great danger. I also want to thank our deputies and partnering agencies for their rapid, coordinated response that brought this family to safety and helped bring a violent offender to justice.”
Background: The daylong ordeal began in LaBelle on January 3, 2023, when Caban took control of his wife’s car, hit and bit her in the face and threatened his children. His family had recently fled their home of Puerto Rico after years of abuse by Caban.
Over the course of several hours he drove his family across several counties, threatening them with acts of violence, even striking his wife with a tire iron. At one point he buried her phone in a citrus field to avoid tracking and then told her he was going to drive to a home improvement store to buy a shovel to kill and bury them all.
She eventually tricked Caban into taking her to a women’s shelter in Immokalee where she alerted staff. CCSO deputies immediately responded, rescuing the family and taking Caban into custody.
