“The scene is horrific, and these are horrific allegations,” Vinton County Sheriff Ryan Cain said at a press conference on June 30. A routine search warrant in rural southeastern Ohio uncovered what state officials are calling one of the most disturbing child welfare cases in recent memory.  The case ultimately led to the rescue of 16 children and the arrest of four adults on felony child endangerment charges.

Investigators with the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) and the Vinton County Sheriff’s Office executed the warrant on June 30 at a home on Ohmer Street in the village of Hamden. Inside, authorities discovered children ranging in age from 18 months to 18 years living in what officials repeatedly described as “deplorable conditions.”

Ohio Attorney General Andy Wilson called the scene “pure evil” and said it was the worst case he had encountered during his career as a prosecutor.

Several of the children required immediate medical treatment. Two were airlifted to Level I trauma centers after being found in critical condition, while all 16 were taken for medical evaluation and placed under the care of child welfare authorities.

“Conditions you cannot even imagine people being in, let alone children being in,” Wilson said during a news conference.

Authorities arrested Gary Siders Sr., Gary Siders Jr., Christina Siders, and Elizabeth Siders, who were all present at the home during the search. Prosecutors initially filed 17 felony child endangerment charges against each defendant because one allegation involved serious physical harm, though officials said the charges are expected to be adjusted to 16 counts.

Investigators emphasized that the case does not involve humantrafficking, and said the four suspects are not residents of Vinton County, appearing instead to have traveled through different parts of Ohio.

The investigation remains active as forensic specialists continue processing evidence collected from the property.

Governor Mike DeWine released the following statement about the situation.

“Ohio Attorney General Andy Wilson has kept me informed about the tragic situation in Vinton County. I have talked to Vinton County Sheriff Ryan Cain to offer any help that we might be able to provide. The Director of the Ohio Department of Children and Youth, Kara Wente, has been working today to assist Vinton County Children’s Services, and will continue to help in the days ahead.

“It is heartbreaking to learn the conditions that these children were living in, and to learn of their medical conditions. Attorney General Wilson is an experienced prosecutor and he has told me he has never seen anything like what he saw today. Fran and I pray for these children, and thank the children’s services workers, law enforcement officers, and medical personnel who are helping them.”

The discovery has stunned residents of Hamden, a quiet village of fewer than 1,000 people. Neighbors told reporters they had no idea children were living inside the small one-story home and rarely saw anyone other than an older man sitting on the porch.

When reporters later visited the property, a strong foul odor reportedly emanated from the residence, while debris and numerous cats surrounded the home.

Vinton County Sheriff Ryan Cain described the allegations as horrific and pledged that everyone responsible would be held accountable.

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine added that state agencies are assisting local officials and offering support for the rescued children.

The four defendants were scheduled to appear in Vinton County court as the criminal investigation continues. Authorities say there is no ongoing threat to the surrounding community.  For more on what officials described as “pure evil”, see the video accompanying this article.
