A 29-year-old Vero Beach man has been formally charged with first-degree murder and tampering with physical evidence in the death of his 76-year-old grandmother, months after investigators say he confessed to the killing. On Friday, the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office announced that Nicholas Leonard Ivey was charged on June 3, 2026, following an extensive investigation into the death of Patricia Ann DiBella.
According to investigators, the case began on February 2, 2026, when family members requested a welfare check at DiBella’s home in the 5000 block of Fairway’s Circle in Vero Beach. Deputies responding to the residence discovered evidence connected to DiBella’s death and took Ivey into custody.
Sheriff’s officials said Ivey later admitted that he had killed his grandmother the previous day. Authorities noted that DiBella had allowed her grandson to stay in her home, making the circumstances of the case especially tragic for her family and loved ones.
Although Ivey had remained in custody on related charges since his arrest, detectives continued gathering evidence before presenting the case for formal prosecution. The sheriff’s office confirmed that he now faces charges of murder and tampering with physical evidence and is being held at the Indian River County Jail without bond.
In a statement, Indian River County Sheriff Eric Flowers praised investigators for their work in the case.
“I am proud of the work our investigations team did to bring justice to Patricia DiBella and her family. No one should lose their life at the hands of someone they trusted and welcomed into their home,” Flowers said.
The sheriff’s office also used the announcement to remind residents that domestic and family violence can affect people of all ages and backgrounds, urging anyone in immediate danger to call 911 and seek assistance through local or national support services.
