Meet Chelsea McDonald, Maryland’s 2025 Elementary School Outstanding Mathematics Educator

(June 12, 2025) Yesterday, Anne Arundel County Public Schools (AACPS) announced that Chelsea McDonald, who teaches fourth grade at Lothian Elementary School and is in her 11th year with Anne Arundel County Public Schools, has been named the “2025 Elementary School Outstanding Mathematics Educator” by the Maryland Council Teachers of Mathematics (MCTM).
Chelsea McDonald is quick to say she draws inspiration from those around her. It’s pretty evident that the reverse is also true. She is the first county teacher to earn an award from the organization since 2020.
“I’m truly honored to receive this state recognition,” said McDonald, who has spent the entirety of her AACPS career at Lothian. “Teaching elementary mathematics is not just about numbers, it’s about helping students build confidence, develop problem-solving skills, and discover the joy of learning. I’m grateful to work with my incredible colleagues, students and school community who inspire me every day.”
The award is given to an elementary math teacher who exemplifies excellence in mathematics education by implementing research-informed practices in their daily work. Teachers must have been in the classroom for at least three years.
McDonald will receive her award in the fall at MCTM’s annual conference.
