Pitcher and managers suspended in Dodgers-Padres bench clearing incident

(June 21, 2025) Yesterday, Major League Baseball (MLB) announced that San Diego Padres pitcher Robert Suarez received a three-game suspension and an undisclosed fine for intentionally hitting Shohei Ohtani of the Los Angeles Dodgers with a pitch in the bottom of the ninth inning of Thursday night’s game at Dodger Stadium.
Michael Hill, MLB’s Senior Vice President for On-Field Operations, made the announcement.
The suspension of Suarez had been scheduled to begin last night when the Padres were set to host the Kansas City Royals at Petco Park. However, Suarez has elected to appeal. Thus, the discipline will be held in abeyance until that process is complete.
In addition, both managers – Mike Shildt of the Padres and Dave Roberts of the Dodgers – have received one-game suspensions and undisclosed fines for unsportsmanlike conduct and for contributing to inciting the benches-clearing incident. Shildt and Roberts were scheduled to serve their respective suspensions last night as the Padres play the Royals and as the Dodgers host the Washington Nationals.
