On the evening of July 14, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy declared that New Jersey would enter into a State of Emergency effective 8:00 p.m. due to flash flooding, severe thunderstorms, intense rainfall, and damaging wind gusts. Executive Order No. 392 declares a State of Emergency across all 21 counties in New Jersey.

“I have declared a State of Emergency out of an abundance of caution due to flash flooding and severe thunderstorms across the state,”said Governor Murphy.“I urge New Jerseyans to exercise caution, follow all safety protocols, and remain off the roads unless absolutely necessary.”

Last night, more than three inches of rain had fallen in Bound Brook, and about 2.5 inches of rain had fallen on the eastern side of Morris County and in areas of Rahway by 7 p.m., according to rainfall data monitor cooperative, as shared by NJ.com.  “dramatic” water rescue occurred in Scotch Plains, according to CBS News in New York..

At 5:38 p.m., authorities in Watchung said the town was under heavy flooding, including Route 22, and asked motorists to avoid driving if possible, according to a nixle alert.  In Somerset County, officials said the entire county was under a shelter-in-place order and that no travel was permitted as of 8:21 p.m.

The Governor encouraged New Jerseyans to visit ready.nj.gov for important weather updates and safety information. Residents should also monitor local forecasts, warnings, and watches.
