U.S. dietary trends: Is your state meat or veggie?

A new study has revealed the most popular diets in each state. And as it turns out, each state does have a fav.
Gabriel Ettenson, MSPT and Chief Medical Officer at Hypervibe.com, analyzed CDC figures revealing that 17.1% of American adults are always on a specialized diet, with distinct patterns across different regions and demographics. The research discovered the most popular diet in each state by analyzing key search terms.
The data found that the keto diet was the most popular diet among Americans, with 47 out of 50 states searching for this diet more than any other. Americans search for this diet 742,525 times each month, with Illinois, California, New York, Texas and Kentucky leading the way as the most keto-loving states.
The keto diet replaces a large portion of carbohydrates with fat and protein, but fat makes up most of the diet. The benefit here is that you cut back on a lot of carbs, such as soda and white bread.
The Mediterranean diet is the second most popular type of diet among Americans, with it being the second choice in 47 states. This diet is Idaho, Oregon and Utah’s go-to choice, though, with a national average of 591,016 monthly searches being made for this diet.
Based on foods from the Mediterranean such as whole grains, fruits, nuts and seeds, the benefits of a Mediterranean diet, according to many studies, include reduced risk of cardiovascular disease and increased lifespan.
The third most popular diet in America is the Paleolithic (paleo) diet. Americans search for this diet 132,508 times each month. Otherwise known as the ‘caveman’ diet, the paleo diet consists of fruits, vegetables, lean meats, fish, eggs, nuts and seeds. According to studies, the paleo diet has helped in lowering blood pressure, aiding weight loss and improving insulin sensitivity.
The DASH diet is the fourth most popular diet among Americans, with an average monthly search volume of 130,831. The states most interested in the DASH diet include Florida, Wyoming, New Jersey and New Hampshire.
DASH stands for ‘Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension’, with the goal of the diet being to prevent and control hypertension. The diet doesn’t allow alcohol, added sodium and foods that are high in saturated fats, among others.
America’s fifth favorite diet is the alkaline diet. Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, Arizona and Ohio like this diet the most. Across America, there are 85,109 average searches made every month for the alkaline diet. The core concept of this is to increase intake of alkaline foods like fruit, vegetables and nuts while avoiding acid-forming foods like meat, dairy and processed food to reduce acidity and maintain an optimal pH level.
The sixth most popular diet among Americans is the Atkins diet. This is a low-carbohydrate, high-protein eating plan designed for weight loss and improved energy levels. It focuses on cutting carbs to encourage the body to burn fat for fuel instead of glucose. It is divided into four phases, starting with strict carb limits and easing up as you progress.
Gabriel Ettenson, MSPT and Chief Medical Officer at Hypervibe.com commented on the findings: “Nearly half of American adults now live with diet-related chronic diseases. Heart conditions, high blood pressure, and type 2 diabetes push many to adopt specialized eating plans as management strategies.”
“The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services urges Americans to maintain healthy eating habits throughout life to manage weight, meet nutrient needs, and cut disease risk.
“Weight loss diets still sit at the top among all specialized eating plans, with 9.1% of adults going on these diets. This means one in ten adults go for this approach, making it far more common than any other option, such as long-term lifestyle changes.
“Every specialized diet must deliver basic nutritional requirements. The right approach should match your personal health situation while providing balanced nutrients, which is why we advise speaking with healthcare professionals before starting any specialized diet.”
