Somerset County man arrested on child sex abuse and assault charges
Law enforcement officials in Maryland arrested a Crisfield man on charges that he sexually abused a minor in Somerset County. The arrest went down on August 21, according to the Maryland State Police.
The 60-year-old alleged child sex abuser was identified as Gene Sheldon Hughes Jr. of Crisfield, Maryland. Hughes was charged with sex abuse of a minor, second-degree assault and other related offenses. He was transported to the Somerset County District Court Commissioner’s Office, where he was ordered to be held without bond.
On Thursday, August 21, 2025, Maryland State Police Investigators from the Princess Anne Criminal Enforcement Division, Eastern Region, obtained an arrest warrant for Hughes Jr. He was located at his home and arrested without incident.
Maryland State Police are supervising the case and said that their investigation continues.
