(September 15, 2025)  This weekend, Florida’s Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office (JSO) reported on a local teenager that’s not old enough to drive a car, but is still looking at one count of murder after allegedly killing another teen.  14-year-old Keyon Byrd turned himself in to law enforcement officials after he shot 18-year-old Marlon Lane earlier this past week.

Background: On Wednesday, September 10, patrol officers responded to a reported shooting at an apartment complex on Labelle Street on the Westside. They found Lane with multiple gunshot wounds. First responders with the Jacksonville Fire Rescue Department rushed him to the hospital, but tragically, Lane died from his injuries.

Homicide Unit detectives began searching for the shooter. During the course of their investigation, working alongside with the Jacksonville Crime Scene Unit, partners at the State Attorney’s Office, and First Coast Crime Stoppers, detectives identified Byrd as the suspect.

The 14-year-old Byrd turned himself in to officials on Friday, the same day the Sheriff’s Office received the warrant for his arrest. He is now behind bars.

The Sheriff’s Office said that they could not stress this enough: “parents and family members, please get involved in your children’s lives.”
