The death of 18-year-old Anna Kepner aboard the Carnival Horizon cruise ship has officially been classified as a homicide, according to a death certificate obtained by her family and reported by ABC News. The document cites “mechanical asphyxia” — indicating she was physically restrained or suffocated by another person.

Kepner’s fatal injury date is listed as November 6, 2025, though the precise time of death remains unknown.  Her death certificate explicitly states she “was mechanically asphyxiated by other person(s),” according to WFTV. Autopsy and toxicology results have not been publicly released, and the Miami-Dade Medical Examiner’s Office declined to comment citing the ongoing investigation.

Background: Anna was on a family vacation aboard the Carnival Horizon, accompanied by her father, stepmother, grandparents, and step-siblings. On November 7, a housekeeper found her body under a bed, wrapped in a blanket and partially covered with life jackets, according to Yahoo! News.

Preliminary findings suggest she died from asphyxiation caused by a “bar hold” — a choke-like restraint involving an arm pressed against the neck. Investigators reportedly found bruising on her neck but have not publicly confirmed any signs of sexual assault or the presence of drugs or alcohol in her system.

Court filings have named Anna’s 16-year-old stepbrother as a person of interest in the case, according to The Guardian.  Anna’s grandparents told investigators that Anna and her stepbrother were very close — “like two peas in a pod” — and had chosen to share a stateroom aboard the ship.

In the days following her death, the stepbrother was hospitalized for psychiatric evaluation, according to the family. The 16-year-old had reportedly told officials that he can’t remember what happened.  The FBI, which is leading the investigation, has not publicly named a suspect or announced any arrests.

Anna’s grandparents, Jeffrey and Barbara Kepner, expressed heartbreak but said that seeing the official ruling has brought a measure of clarity — though it cannot ease their loss. They emphasized the family’s tight-knit bond despite being a blended household and noted that Anna and her stepbrother got along well.

NBC 6 News in South Florida reported that the Carnival Cruise Line has stated it is fully cooperating with the investigation.

Anna was an 18-year-old high school senior from Titusville, Florida. According to her family, she was a straight-A student, a part of her school’s cheer team, and had dreams of joining the U.S. Navy and working as a K-9 police officer.

The FBI’s investigation into Anna’s death remains active and ongoing. For more on this tragic murder aboard the Carnival Horizon cruise ship, see the video below.
