U.S. joins West Virginia in mourning after DC shooting leaves one Guard Member dead, another fighting for life
What began as a routine patrol in our nation’s capital turned into heartbreak for two families, a community, a State and the entire U.S. On Wednesday afternoon, two members of the West Virginia National Guard were shot in a brazen ambush just blocks from the White House — and by Thursday evening, one of them had lost her life.
The victims are 20-year-old U.S. Army Specialist Sarah Beckstrom and 24-year-old U.S. Air Force Staff Sergeant Andrew Wolfe. They were on duty near Farragut West Metro Station, part of the deployment under Donald Trump’s “Safe and Beautiful” mission in the District.
Authorities say a lone gunman opened fire using a .357-caliber Smith & Wesson revolver, in what has been described as an ambush-style, targeted attack. The shooter has been taken into custody and hospitalized after being wounded by return fire.
For the community in West Virginia, the loss hits especially hard. Beckstrom, barely 20 years old, had answered the call to serve beginning in June 2023. Wolfe, a 2019 recruit, had already earned several commendations for his dedication.
