A competency hearing is schedulked to begin this week for Catherine Hoggle who is accused in the 2014 disappearance of her two young children, Sarah and Jacob. The hearing, which will determine if Hoggle is fit to stand trial, has drawn attention to the case, which remains one of the most baffling and heartbreaking mysteries in Montgomery County’s recent history.

Hoggle, now 38, was the last person seen with her children – 3-year-old Sarah and 2-year-old Jacob – on September 7, 2014. The children were reported missing after Hoggle was found wandering in a Maryland park days later, showing signs of mental distress. Despite extensive search efforts, the children’s bodies have never been located, and their whereabouts remain unknown.

At issue is whether Hoggle, in 2025, is able to assist in her own defense following her reindictment in July. Hoggle has been housed and treated at Clifton T. Perkins Hospital Center in Jessup, where the doctors consistently said that she is not competent to stand trial.  ~ WTOP

Over the years, Hoggle’s mental state has been a point of contention. In 2015, a judge ruled that Hoggle was not competent to stand trial due to her mental health issues, which included a diagnosis of schizophrenia. She was committed to a psychiatric facility for treatment, but her case has remained in the courts, with periodic hearings to assess her fitness to face charges.

During the hearing, prosecutors are expected to present evidence and expert testimony regarding Hoggle’s mental health. The defense will argue whether she is capable of understanding the charges against her and participating in her defense. The outcome of this hearing will determine whether the case will proceed to trial or if additional psychiatric evaluations are needed.

Catherine Hoggle was indicted in July on two counts of first-degree murder for the deaths of her children — Sarah Hoggle, 3, and Jacob Hoggle, 2. The children were last seen on Sept. 7, 2014, and their mother was reportedly the last person seen with them. No bodies have ever been found. Hoggle was initially charged with child neglect and obstruction. A murder charge was added in 2017.  ~  Fox 45 Baltimore

Hoggle’s family and law enforcement officials have been waiting for answers for over a decade, hoping for some closure regarding the fate of the two children. In the years since the disappearance, Hoggle’s mental health has continued to be a central issue, raising difficult questions about accountability and justice in cases involving severe mental illness.

Despite the prolonged legal battle, authorities have continued to investigate, and new evidence has occasionally come to light, but the mystery of what happened to Sarah and Jacob remains unresolved.

On Sunday, the children’s father, Troy Turner, held a vigil in their honor. He said after 11 years, the pain of their loss is still fresh.   “It feels like nothing’s changed,” he said. “Whoever said time heals all wounds lied. This gets harder every single day every year.”  ~ WUSA-9

Her competency hearing is scheduled to run today and tomorrow, December 8 and 9. As the hearing continues, the question of whether Hoggle can stand trial will be a pivotal moment in the quest for justice for the children and their family. Many are holding out hope that the proceedings will shed light on the circumstances surrounding the disappearance of Sarah and Jacob, while others remain skeptical, given the ongoing uncertainties surrounding Hoggle’s mental state.
