Lauren Boebert (R-Colorado) criticized Trump for vetoing bipartisan legislation that supports a major drinking-water project, saying she hopes the rejection “has nothing to do with political retaliation.”

In a striking departure from GOP party unity, Republican Rep. Lauren Boebert sharply criticized her Republican president, Donald Trump, on December 31, 2025, after he vetoed a bipartisan water infrastructure bill that she championed for her southeastern Colorado district. The veto — one of the first of Trump’s second term — ignited controversy in both parties, pitting a once-staunch Trump ally against the president amid broader questions about loyalty and governance, according to Reuters.

The legislation Trump rejected, the Finish the Arkansas Valley Conduit Act, would have helped complete a long-awaited Arkansas Valley Conduit project, a decades-old water pipeline designed to deliver clean drinking water to roughly 50,000 rural residents in eastern Colorado whose local groundwater is often high in salt and occasionally radioactive.

The bill had passed both the House and Senate unanimously, offering no-interest, extended federal loans to local communities to complete construction — a measure leaders described as critical for public health, agriculture, and economic development, according to Colorado Public Radio. The veto came after Trump’s vow to retaliate against Colorado for keeping his ally, Tina Peters, in prison – despite his attempt to pardon her earlier in the month, and Boebert’s action to force the release of the government’s files on the late convicted sexual offender Epstein

Trump’s veto message cited concerns about rising costs and the burden on American taxpayers, asserting that his administration is “committed to preventing American taxpayers from funding expensive and unreliable policies” and that blocking such spending was essential to “restoring fiscal sanity.”  ~ PBS

Colorado Politics shared that Boebert, representing Colorado’s 4th Congressional District, responded with rare public rebuke of the president. She denounced Trump’s veto of a “completely non-controversial, bipartisan bill” and stressed that it would deny access to clean water for many residents who had supported Trump electorally. Boebert also suggested, without any actual proof, that the veto “might be politically motivated,” possibly linked to her role in pushing for the release of internal government files related to Jeffrey Epstein — an initiative Trump resisted earlier in the year — calling on leadership to “put people over politics.”

The Trump v. Boebert dispute highlights emerging strains within GOP ranks, as lawmakers weigh their allegiance to a beleagured president against local interests and bipartisan cooperation on infrastructure. Some Republicans have responded cautiously, while Democrats seized on the veto to criticize what they view as partisan obstruction of essential services, according to The Associated Press.

As of early January 1, 2026, it remains unclear whether congressional leaders will pursue an override vote, which would require a two-thirds majority in both chambers — a high bar but conceivable given the bill’s unanimous passage.  For more on Lauren Boebert publicly rebuking her president, see the video below.
