A community remains in shock and deep sorrow after 28-year-old elementary school teacher, Rebecca Rauber, was found dead in the snow on Sunday, January 25, nearly two days after she was reported missing late Friday night.

Rauber, a second-grade teacher at Riverside Elementary School, was last seen on surveillance video just before midnight Friday, January 23, walking away from the Town Royal bar in downtown Emporia without her jacket, purse or phone, according to police and family accounts.

Earlier in the weekend, bitter cold temperatures and a heavy snowstorm — part of a larger winter system that blanketed much of the Midwest — overtook the area, complicating search efforts and raising concerns about exposure.

With the help of K-9 teams including K-9 Daisy, the Emporia Police Department located Rauber’s body about 300 yards south of West 4th Avenue, not far from where she was last tracked on video. She was discovered in a wooded area and was found covered in snow, leading investigators to believe that she may have succumbed to hypothermia in the early hours after she disappeared.

Police have said no foul play is suspected, and an autopsy and toxicology tests are pending before a formal cause of death is released.

Rauber’s disappearance sparked a large search involving local agencies, outside support from the Kansas Highway Patrol, Lyon County Sheriff’s Office, Search and Rescue of Kansas, and community volunteers, all working in hazardous conditions. Officials thanked the public for its support and said the family has been notified.

In the wake of the tragedy, Emporia Public Schools described Rauber as a “valued member of our school community” whose loss is felt across the district. Counselors and support teams have been made available to students and staff as they process the difficult news.

Her friends and colleagues remember Rauber for her bright spirit and kindness. At a community prayer service held Monday evening, loved ones shared memories of her joy and compassion, noting her deep connection with her students and the broader Emporia community. Plans to honor her include planting her favorite flowers in classrooms as a lasting tribute.

As Emporia mourns, officials have urged respect for the family’s privacy and support for those affected by the loss of the young teacher whose life touched many.
