On January 27, U.S. Representative Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) was assaulted during a town hall meeting in Minneapolis, Minnesota, when a man suddenly rushed the stage and sprayed her with an unknown liquid from a syringe.

The incident occurred in North Minneapolis at a town hall event hosted by Omar, who was addressing constituents and talking about federal immigration enforcement — including calling for the abolition of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and urging Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem to resign or face impeachment — at the time the attack unfolded. The video of the assault shows Omar being startled initially as the man jumped at her – and then shows her chasing him down after he sprayed her with that unknown liquid.

According to police and eyewitness accounts, the assailant approached from the front row, sprayed a foul-smelling liquid that witnesses compared to ammonia or vinegar, and was immediately tackled by security and arrested on suspicion of third-degree assault. There were no immediate signs that the spray caused serious harm to Omar or attendees; and forensic teams were called in to test and identify the material.

Assailant I.D. and Possible Motive:  Law enforcement identified the suspect as Anthony James Kazmierczak, a 55-year-old man from the Minneapolis area, who was quickly taken into custody. Police booked him into Hennepin County Jail on a third-degree assault charge.

Authorities have not yet publicly detailed a motive, but the attack occurred during a period of heightened political polarization around immigration policy. Omar’s criticism of federal enforcement actions and her calls for leadership changes may have contributed to the atmosphere in which the attack took place.

Reactions from Omar and Other Leaders: Despite the attack, Omar declined immediate medical attention and resumed speaking, emphasizing resilience and telling the crowd, “We are Minnesota strong.” She later posted on social media that she is “a survivor” and would not be intimidated from doing her work.

The incident drew bipartisan criticism and concern regarding political violence. Minnesota Mayor Jacob Frey, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and others condemned the assault. House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries rebuked inflammatory rhetoric that he said could encourage such attacks, while Republican Rep. Nancy Mace also decried violence against public officials.

Law enforcement and political leaders have stressed the importance of maintaining civil discourse and ensuring the safety of elected officials and the public. For more on the protester’s startling assault, see the video accompanying this article.
