A viral social media prank turned deadly in Volusia County, where authorities say a teenager’s door-kicking stunt led to a family’s dog escaping and being killed.

The Volusia Sheriff’s Office announced on January 27 that a 14-year-old DeLand boy, identified as Jerald “Trey” Lucas, was arrested at school on felony burglary and misdemeanor criminal mischief charges stemming from a December 20 incident in Deltona.

Investigators say the case began when a homeowner returned that night to find her front door kicked in and her 3-year-old Yorkshire terrier, “Spookie,” missing. The dog was later found along a roadway and is believed to have been struck by a vehicle after getting loose during the break-in.

According to deputies, several juveniles had attended a nearby party that evening before going into the neighborhood to take part in what authorities described as a variation of the long-known “ding-dong ditch” prank — recently amplified on TikTok — where participants knock or kick doors and run away.

A neighbor’s security camera captured audio from the incident, which helped investigators piece together what happened. Detectives determined the suspect kicked the victim’s door multiple times with enough force to break it open, allowing the dog to escape.

The Sheriff’s Office characterized the act as part of a reckless social media trend that escalated beyond a prank and caused significant harm. No additional injuries beyond the beloved family pet were reported.

The case underscores growing concerns among law enforcement about online challenges and prank culture spilling into real-world consequences, particularly when property damage or safety risks are involved.

Opinion: Thanks to peer-pressure and popular social media trends that shouldn’t be taken seriously and acted upon, Trey is now looking at criminal charges in the the juvenile justice system – with a spot on his record that will follow him around for a long while.  Here’s hoping he’s learned the very valuable lesson that “actions have consequences.”

Rest in Peace Spookie; and Best of Luck in the future Trey.
