(February 6, 2026) Last night in stunning recognition of his skill, leadership, and resilience, Matthew Stafford has been named the 2026 AP NFL Most Valuable Player. The Los Angeles Rams quarterback’s exceptional performance this season has earned him the league’s most prestigious individual honor, placing him among the NFL’s elite quarterbacks.

A Historic Season:  Stafford, 37 (with his 38th birthday on Feb. 8,) led the Rams to a dominant regular-season record.  He finished the 2025-2026 NFL regular season, as of February 2026, with league-leading numbers, throwing for 4,707 yards, 46 touchdowns, and 8 interceptions. He was considered a top MVP favorite with a 109.2 passer rating, according to ESPN.

From Detroit to Glory: Stafford’s journey to MVP hasn’t been without its struggles. A former No. 1 overall pick in the 2009 NFL Draft by the Detroit Lions, Stafford spent the majority of his career with a team that rarely competed for championships. Despite putting up strong numbers, Stafford was often left out of MVP discussions as the Lions never achieved postseason success. But after being traded to the Rams in 2021, his career took an upward turn.

“I’ve been through a lot in my career, and this MVP is just the cherry on top,” Stafford said in a statement after the announcement. “I couldn’t have done it without the amazing support from my teammates, coaches, and the Rams organization. This is a team effort, and I’m proud of what we’ve achieved together.”   ~ NFL Week 15 Recap

According to the Super Bowl Preview, with this MVP award, Stafford joins a list of quarterbacks who have transcended their roles, earning respect not only for their raw talent but for their perseverance and ability to thrive under pressure. The MVP win also positions Stafford as one of the frontrunners for a potential spot in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in the future.

“Matthew’s success is a testament to his work ethic and the person he is,” said Rams head coach Sean McVay. “He’s the heartbeat of this team, and this MVP is just a reflection of his commitment to greatness.”

“I’m proud of what we’ve accomplished this season,” Stafford said. “But we’re not done yet. We’ve got big goals, and this MVP doesn’t change the fact that we want to win it all.”
