Dorchester Co. man charged with attempted murder after shooting at Maryland State Trooper

A Dorchester County man is waking up behind bars today after authorities say he opened fire on a Maryland State Trooper responding to a disturbance call late Friday night in Vienna. 

Armond Darel Jolley, 46, of Vienna, has been charged with attempted first-degree murder and related offenses following the incident, according to Maryland State Police. He is currently being held without bond at the Dorchester County Detention Center.

The shooting unfolded around 10:20 p.m. on April 2, when a trooper from the Easton Barrack responded to a reported disturbance at a home in the 100 block of Middle Street. Investigators say the trooper approached the residence and encountered a man standing inside near the living room. When the trooper attempted to speak with him, the man abruptly retreated further into the home.

Moments later, police say, the man reappeared armed with a gun and fired multiple shots in the trooper’s direction before fleeing the scene. The trooper did not return fire and instead took cover while calling for backup. He was not injured.

Additional troopers quickly flooded the area, securing the neighborhood and canvassing for the suspect. Within roughly 20 minutes, officers located Jolley near Water Street, directly behind the home. After a short foot pursuit, he was taken into custody without further incident.

Multiple specialized units responded to assist with the investigation, including the Criminal Enforcement Division, the Office of the State Fire Marshal, and forensic technicians. The Maryland State Police Homicide Unit is now leading the ongoing investigation in coordination with the Dorchester County State’s Attorney’s Office.

Authorities have not released any additional details about what led to the initial disturbance or a possible motive in the shooting.
