(April 15, 2026) Jessica McClure Morales — forever known to the public as “Baby Jessica” after her dramatic 1987 rescue from a narrow Texas well — has been arrested on a domestic assault charge, nearly four decades after the incident that made her a global symbol of hope.
According to authorities, Morales, now 40, was taken into custody Saturday night after deputies responded to a reported disturbance at her home in Midland County, Texas. Law enforcement officials say she was charged with assault causing bodily injury involving family violence. She was later released from the Midland County Detention Center after posting bond. Officials have only released limited details about the circumstances surrounding the incident, and an arrest affidavit has not yet been made public.
Morales first became internationally known in October 1987, when she fell roughly 22 feet into an eight-inch-wide well casing at her aunt’s home in Midland. At just 18 months old, she became lodged deep underground, sparking a massive rescue operation that captured global attention.
Those of us that were around in the 80s remember full-well the heart-rendering tale of the baby girl stuck in that Texas well pipe. For nearly 60 hours, emergency crews worked around the clock in a tense and technically challenging effort to save her. Rescuers ultimately drilled a parallel shaft and a horizontal tunnel through rock to reach the trapped toddler.
The rescue operation was broadcast live on television, drawing millions of viewers and turning the ordeal into one of the most unforgettable rescue stories in modern American history.
At one point during the rescue, workers reported hearing the young girl singing, a moment that provided hope amid the high-stakes effort. Morales survived the ordeal but required numerous surgeries in the years that followed, including treatment for injuries that resulted in the loss of a toe.
Despite her global fame, Morales has largely lived a private life in Texas as a wife and mother of two. She has previously said she has no memory of the incident that made her famous.
Her recent arrest has brought renewed public attention to her story, though key details about the alleged domestic incident remain unclear as the case moves forward.
