A decades-old missing persons case in Baltimore County has taken a dramatic turn, with police arresting the husband of Michelle Rust nearly 24 years after she vanished without a trace.

Authorities announced that Dwight “DJ” Rust Jr. was indicted by a grand jury on April 20, 2026, and arrested the following day in connection with his wife’s 2002 disappearance. He is now charged with first-degree murder and is being held without bail at the Baltimore County Detention Center.

Michelle Rust, 24 at the time, was reported missing on July 20, 2002, after her husband told police she had left their home in the 1800 block of Clarke Boulevard in Halethorpe that morning to shop for supplies for their son’s third birthday party, but never returned. She was believed to be driving a green Dodge van.

Later that day, her father-in-law discovered the vehicle abandoned in a nearby neighborhood. Investigators noted a troubling detail: a key broken off in the driver’s side door lock. Despite extensive searches and years of investigative work, Michelle Rust was never found.

Over time, detectives began to question the original account. Witness interviews revealed that no one had actually seen Michelle leave the home that day. Investigators also determined she had not accessed her bank accounts and, as a diabetic reliant on medication, would have been unlikely to disappear voluntarily or leave her young child behind.

During a bail hearing, prosecutors said they had ruled out suicide or voluntary disappearance, narrowing their focus to Dwight Rust as the only person with both motive and means. They also disclosed that he had been involved in an affair at the time and had allegedly planned to leave his wife the same weekend she went missing.

A judge ordered Rust held without bail, citing concerns for public safety and flight risk given the severity of the charge. His defense attorney has denied the allegations, stating there is no clear evidence linking him to the crime.

The criminal indictment against the husband remains sealed, and authorities have not publicly detailed what new developments led to the arrest after more than two decades. For more on Dwight “DJ” Rust Jr. being charged with murdering his wife, Michelle Rust, see the video below.
