A 19-year-old Maryland mother is facing child neglect charges after police say officers discovered a 6-month-old baby left alone inside an unsafe and unsanitary Aberdeen home Monday evening.

According to the Aberdeen Police Department, officers responded May 18 to the 600 block of West Bel Air Avenue after receiving reports that an infant had been left unattended inside a residence.

When officers arrived, they located the baby alone in what authorities described as hazardous and unclean living conditions. Police said the child was taken into temporary protective custody while investigators worked to locate the child’s mother.

With assistance from the Bel Air Police Department, officers later found 19-year-old Kira Faust, who admitted she had left the infant home alone while she traveled to Bel Air to meet friends at McDonald’s.

Authorities said the baby was cared for by officers until Child Protective Services could arrange a safe placement. UM Upper Chesapeake Medical Center in Aberdeen also provided emergency baby supplies to assist officers caring for the child.

Faust was arrested and charged with child neglect. She was later released on her own recognizance pending further court proceedings.

Police have not released additional information about the child’s condition.
